IDOs vs ICOs: Understanding the Differences in Token Launch Mechanisms

Over the last few years, we've seen an influx of Web3 projects across all sectors: decentralised Finance, Gamefi, NFTs, and everything in between. What's inevitable across all of these projects is that they have to launch at some point.

Now, with the exception of NFTs, most of these projects launch a token. These are often used for financial purposes, creating a more accessible fundraising and treasury management pathway. However, we also see other use cases, such as governance.

Regardless, a token must be launched, and a project can do this in several ways. Today, we’ll look at two of the main options and explore the key differences between them.

Initial Coin Offerings (ICO)

Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) were the trailblazers of blockchain-based fundraising. During the crypto boom in 2017, ICOs set the stage for new projects to raise capital by selling tokens directly to investors. Many projects leveraged this during this time, contributing significantly to the rise in popularity of these launches.

Simply put, a project would market itself to investors by outlining its goals, tokenomics, roadmap, etc., and try to secure early investment. There are usually several phases to an ICO and early investors secure tokens at a discount.

There were several benefits to a project ICO, such as:

  • Accessibility: Anyone worldwide with internet access would be able to invest in ICOs, creating a global pool of potential investors.
  • Early Investment: ICOs allow projects to gain investment early, providing funding to develop the rest of their vision.
  • Lower Costs: A reduced price in early investment rounds can create greater ROI for investors and reduce the entry barrier for investors.

Despite these benefits and others, ICOs had some drawbacks. Although they were revolutionary in creating a new way of fundraising, they also lacked regulatory oversight, making them riskier than traditional fundraising. They were also very volatile, but that could arguably be the nature of crypto as a whole.

Initial DEX Offerings (IDO)

Let’s move on to an area we’re very familiar with here at BlastOff—initial DEX Offerings (IDOs). With our first launches in sight this month, it seems a good time to delve into their benefits.

You could say that ICOs paved the way for new fundraising methods, and IDOs combatted some of the challenges they faced and became the next stage in blockchain investment mechanisms.

IDOs differ in how they offer tokens, launching them on decentralised exchanges. This addresses specific concerns, taking advantage of exchanges increases security, transparency and user control.

In addition, exchanges' ability to provide immediate liquidity to tokens helps stabilise the token price. This protects investors from volatility issues that could cause them to lose their investment.

Main Differences

Although both launch methods are viable options for blockchain-based fundraising and offer similar benefits, such as accessibility for investors and early funding for projects, there are differences to bear in mind:

  • Launch Platforms: As the name suggests, IDOs are launched on decentralised exchanges, increasing security and transparency and reducing risk.
  • Regulatory Aspects: The decentralised nature of IDOs means less pressure from regulators compared to the scrutiny often placed on ICOs
  • Security and Transparency: Operating on decentralised exchanges means that IDOs gain increased security from the use of smart contracts and automated token distribution. Plus, the ability to verify transactions leads to increased trust amongst the community.

Why BlastOff Chooses IDOs

The differences between ICOs and IDOs should be apparent so far. Although ICOs still play an essential role in blockchain-based fundraising today, the evolved investment method of IDOs offers plenty of benefits. But why exactly do we choose them?

Let us return to the network we are built on. Blast is a blockchain L2 unique in its native yield capabilities. This has led to many dApps built on the infrastructure, which has amassed many opportunities and fostered huge communities.

ICOs are great for straight-up investment, but they can also be tailored more to investors solely looking for a return on investment.

IDOs resonate with the more crypto-savvy community that values and supports the future of decentralisation and transparency. This community is the heart of BlastOff, and it's constantly growing, with each member contributing to our shared vision.

People who invest in the projects we launch want to be actively engaged, desire projects to do well, and share our vision of the future of Web3.

That’s why we choose IDOs.

Final Thoughts

Although both token launch mechanisms have significantly impacted the world of Web3, IDOs have taken the advantages of their predecessor and combatted some of its challenges, making it a winner in this head-to-head.

Despite the rise of IDOs, ICOs continue to play a crucial role, serving an essential purpose to investors that is likely to endure for the foreseeable future.

With several IDOs coming very soon (keep an eye out towards the end of this month), you’ll be able to experience the benefits of these launches firsthand! All you need is to have some $OFF staked on the platform. If it’s still held on Polygon, bridge it to Blast first and participate in the exciting IDOs coming.

It’s a no-brainer: get involved!

As always, watch this space and our social media for more news on what’s around the corner. Important information is coming very soon!

What is BlastOff?

BlastOff, built on Blast, is a game-changing platform combining a launchpad and yield aggregator.

It maximises user yields using Blast Native Yield and YZone, plus YIDOs, for extra returns by funding new Blast projects. Unlike other blockchains, Blast's unique infrastructure and native yield potential enable innovative, yield-focused products.
